Haiti - The Poorest Country in the World
|
Size: Haiti is slightly smaller than the U.S. state of Maryland Population: Approximately 9 million people Terrain: Mostly rough and mountainous Climate: Predominantly tropical, becoming semi-arid to the east where mountains cut off the trade winds.
Haiti lies in the middle of the Caribbean hurricane belt and is subject to severe storms from June to October, with certain areas experiencing repeated flooding and devastation. In addition, the country experiences occasional earthquakes and periodic droughts. There has been extensive deforestation because much of the land has been cleared for agriculture, and tree cover has been cut down to make charcoal for cooking fuel. This has resulted in severe soil erosion.
